<p align="left" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Arial">Here is yesterday’s chapter:</font></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Arial">This is the first year we have a training contest in our country. This is somewhat similar to the ASTD Excellence in Training Award, which some of you may be familiar with.</font></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Arial">I was appointed as a member of the steering committee for this new project. Being in its first year, we have to work out all the details of the competition.<br />
Yesterday we decided to formalize the evaluation processes and forms. We have to come out with a standard method of scoring the entries which will start flowing in in a few months time.</font></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Arial">We knew that this should be a collaborative effort, with the judges taking part in the decision making and design processed of all evaluation tools.</font></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Arial">True to my resolution, I suggested we start a wiki for the award judges. In the wiki we will present our first draft of the evaluation forms, asking the judges to respond or suggest changes. At the end of this process, I hope to produce a final evaluation kit which will be created by us and the judges in a collaborative manner.</font></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Arial">Don’t ask me how I intend to do that. I was on the blog path until today, and the wiki is a total mystery for me. Now, I have to study its ins and outs in order to produce the tool I expect it to be.</font></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Arial">If I have any questions, I’m sure I’ll get some help here. This is what our little UNworkshop is all about, isn’t it?</font></p>

<p align="left" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Arial">Anyway, here is my latest informal learning initiative:</font></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Arial">One of my clients, a big financial organization asked me to help the people who write their procedures. Workers in this organization complain the procedures are not friendly, difficult to understand or apply. All the writers are not professional writers, but rather high ranking experts, each in their own field. We have some 200 of those.</font></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Arial">My usual response to such requests is a course or workshop followed by some OJT coaching. This time, true to my Informal-learning resolution, I’ve added some informal components to my response.</font></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Arial">We decided to start a special page/site in the organizational knowledge management (KM) system. I’ve called it Procedure Writers’ Doorstep. <span> </span>I use the term &quot;doorstep&quot; often to indicate something smaller than a whole portal.<br />
The site will include a forum for writers, and also a forum for readers who wish to respond or feedback the writers. We shall also publish some weekly tips and principles on the subject of effective writing. These are open to comments in a way similar to our blogs, so there should be some more focused conversations there.</font></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Arial">Here is a question I would like to pose: since solutions like the one I’ve described reside on organizational <b>intRAnet</b> platforms, how can we use tools like blogs or wikis? Are there special intranet versions? Are they safe? You know, financial organizations are data-safety nuts, and for a good reason. Well, truth is all my clients are…</font></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Arial">By the way, talking of effective writing, I do not know how many people here are aware of it, but we are very honored to have <a href="https://informl.pbwiki.com/Bob%20Horn">Bob Horn </a> as a member of our community. In all my writing seminars I talk about him and his <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_mapping">Information-Mapping concept</a>. For me he is a real genius, but I have never had any contact with him until this unworkshop. His concepts were later used by famous gurus especially <a href="http://www.clarktraining.com/articles.php">Ruth Colvin Clark </a> (one good article to read is: Recycling Knowledge With Learning Objects) who based most of her training design models on Horn’s work. </font></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Arial">Hey, this is my first experience with creating links in a blog. what a feat! I realy hope they work&#8230;<br />
I used the very elemntary method of the linking icon of the editor here, but peeping into the documentation showed this is just the tip of the iceberg. It seems linking is an art I'll have to master here.</font></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This blog is dedicated to Informal Learning. Today, i am still a novice of sorts: there is a lot I know about learning and training, but the Informal aspect of it &#8211; especially the web based informal learning &#8211; is still quite a mystery.</p>
<p>To start, I made a resolution: I decided to try, on a daily basis, to apply informal learning principles in my ongoing projects. I am a training design consultant to several organizations so there are a lot of opportunities to try this stuff.</p>
<p>Here is today's first trial.</p>
<p>Today I was coaching a training manager who specializes in computer based learning. My coaching sessions with him deal mainly with the cognitive aspects of learning, with a special focus on CBT. most of the training we discuss is blended into formal courses. In his organization the trainees actually use computers in the classroom to do their CBT learning.</p>
<p>Today, true to my &quot;one informal learnign a day&quot; resolution we discussed the possible use of his CBT learnware by other people in the organization, right from their desktop, durnig regular work hours. We searched some JIT (just in time) features we can add to the training, in order for this to work. For example, search capabilities, better menus and internal links, possible intranet forums on the training subject with direct link from the CBT unit etc.</p>
<p>We decided to try and add such features to our future training projects. Hope this works.</p>
